Crassula Cuties

Crassula is a genus of about 220 species of succulent plants in the family of Crassulaceae. They are native to many different parts of the world. However, the varieties that are grown and loved by most succulent lovers are coming from the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
Crassulas was first formally described by the famous Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in 1753. The generic name “Crassula” derives from the Latin “Crassus”, meaning “thick” and refers to the fleshly plump leaves.
The members of the genus are annuals or perennials, herbaceous or woody, and some have underground tubers. They vary in size and growth habits. These succulents range from groundcovers to shrubs or small trees.
Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures, they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny windowsill or under a grow light. They need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
Not all plants have a common name. I seem to notice hybrids or those cultivated by well-known nurseries give them common names for marketing reasons.
There are many more varieties than what I listed but I atempted to give you a rounded peak into this wonderful plant family.
Crassula arborescens- Silver Dollar
Silver Dollar Jade (Crassula arborescens) (Willendow): A superstar grower whether kept indoors as a potted plant or grown outside as a dense, mounding shrub in frost-free climates. Its silvery leaves are outlined in pink and dotted with hydathodes for drought tolerance. They can even flush purple in response to drought and sun exposure. Indoor growing, small pots, and pruning will keep Silver Dollar Jade in a small, manageable size.
Jade is a forgiving, low maintenance grower and makes a great choice for beginners. All it needs to look great is sunlight, great drainage, and protection from hard frost. The most common issue growers face is over-watering. Water deeply, but only when the soil is completely dry. Mature, outdoor shrubs tend not to need irrigation at all.
Jade is easy to prune and any stem cuttings will readily re-root if transplanted Silver Dollar Jade produces dense clusters of white, star-shaped blossoms in some winters that turn pink as the flowers age. The silvery colors and large leaves of this variety make it a beautiful contrast in succulent arrangements.

Crassula arborescens undulatifolia Ripple Jade
Ripple Jade (Crassula arborescens ssp. undulatifolia) (Tölken): The waviest of the Jade Plants. Its waxy, blue-green leaves can flush fuchsia at the edges when stressed with full sun, drought, or cold temperatures. In the wild, it grows en masse on rocky slopes in South Africa, but it also works well as a landscaping shrub in frost-free climates and as a potted house plant everywhere else.
When given room to grow, Ripple Jade will form a dense, mounding shrub up to 3.0′ tall. It responds well to pruning, however, which reveals its thick, succulent branches for a tree-like, bonsai appearance. Flowers are a rare sight on this Jade, but it can produce clusters of white, star-shaped blossoms in late winter.
Ripple Jade is very drought-tolerant, but it does need bright sunshine, great drainage, and protection from hard frosts. Be sure to plant in pots with drainage holes and water deeply only when the soil is completely dry. This plant is a natural subspecies, not a hybrid, and thus is a very strong, low-maintenance grower. It even propagates readily from cuttings.

Red Pagoda or Pagoda Village (Crassula capitella ssp. thyrsiflora) (Tölken): An eye-catching tower of stacked, triangular leaves. It is native to South Africa where its long stems sprawl and form mats on dry, rocky slopes. In cultivation, Pagoda Village can spill nicely from containers or be planted as a ground cover in frost-free climates.
